Getting prepared for the High Level Political Forum on sustainable development (HLPF)

The next HLPF will take place from July 9th to 18th in New York. This year is particularly important as for the first time SDG4 will be reviewed, with the theme being “Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”, focusing on SDG 4, 8, 10, 13, 16 and 17.

The HLPF is a key mechanism in the United Nations (UN) system for accountability, follow up and review of the 2030 Agenda For Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at a global level. It is a platform where ministers, governments, civil society, the private sector and other stakeholders come together to assess the successes and challenges of SDG implementation around the world. The programme is available here.

The Global Campaign for Education (GCE) is an Organising Partner of the Education and Academia Stakeholder Group (EASG). The EASG brings together human rights based education civil society organisations, networks that work on the right to education as well as organisations working in the field of academia to monitor and review SDGs, particularly SDG4.

The EASG is part of the of Major Groups and Other Stakeholders (MGoS) and as such can attend meetings; have access to official information and documents; intervene in official meetings; submit documents; present written and oral contributions to the HLPF; make recommendations on declarations that the HLPF adopts and organises side events alongside the HLPF.

All members of GCE can apply for EASG membership. Please apply for membership here.

Please read through the more detailed briefing we prepared.

In order to better coordinate our presence and actions at the HLPF, please let us know what your plans are here (if you have not already done so).

GCE will also organise a workshop and a webinar on VNR engagement (more details soon).

  • Participation is limited during the presentation of the VNRs, so the MGoS have prepared this survey to collect your inputs to prepare statements and questions. MGoS encourage all organisations and networks (on global, regional, national and grass-roots levels) that are engaged in national implementation and may have participated in any stage of the VNR preparation to provide comments. It is also possible for organisations and networks to provide thematic and cross-cutting comments. Click here to provide your inputs/ questions.
  • Please note that registration for the HLPF are already open, follow this link if you plan to attend.

GCE and its members and partners will organise or co-sponsor a series of side events during the HLPF. A consolidated calendar will be shared early May, as soon as the list of approved side events within the UN premises is published. In the meantime, if you are organising side events outside the UN and already have a date fixed, please let us know here.

We will keep you informed of the developments around the HLPF. If you have any questions, please address them to Vernor and Maryline .
