What happened in Action Week 2008? The national coalition, MEPT invited the Ministry of Education to participate in the World’s Biggest Lesson across all ten provinces of the country. The Deputy Minister for Education was invited to a school with no chairs, desks, or glass in the windows, where children struggle to study, and was taught the lesson.
For many of those involved in the campaign this was the first opportunity they had to sit in a classroom, including adult learners and children who had been excluded from education because of poverty, disability or becoming orphaned.
The lesson was also taught by internationally renowned musician Stewart Sukuma with the help of some children from the local communities. The week also saw the release of a study carried out on the FTI funding mechanism.
The Big Event saw the presentation of the first annual prizes for excellence in journalism on the subject of Education for All. This is an initiative carried out by MEPT with the support of UNESCO, MISA (Media Institute of Southern Africa) and SNJ (National Union of Journalists). The day concluded with performances of music and dance by local and national groups.
