“Transforming public education systems for equality, inclusion and justice” GCE’s 6th World Assembly, 16-18 November, Nepal
The sixth Global Campaign for Education (GCE) World Assembly will be held from the 16th to 18th November 2018 under the theme “Transforming public education systems for equality, inclusion and justice” in Kathmandu, Nepal. GCE looks forward to this momentous global event and preparations are in full swing. As stakeholders vested in the right to education, the World Assembly is a key moment for all of us. It is an ideal space to reflect on progress made, exchange learnings and ways of working as together we scale up our efforts and global impact in achieving good quality inclusive education for all.
As a run up to the World Assembly, the CSEF Global Learning event will happen on 13th to 15th November, and for the first time GCE is also convening a Youth Caucus on the 14th and 15th.
This year’s World Assembly and related events will gather more than 100 member organisations from all around the world along with partners and observers.
Global Learning Event : 13th - 15th November 2018
The CSEF Global Learning Event convenes as a precursor to the 2018 GCE World Assembly. The Global Learning Event intends to connect all national coalitions and regional members currently supported by the CSEF programme for a comprehensive 3 day collaborative and participative learning and sharing experience.
While CSEF-supported coalitions often find opportunities to collaborate and work together within their specific regions, coalitions rarely get a chance to interact with their counterparts from other regions for a meaningful cross-regional engagement, learning and sharing. The GLE is designed to combine various sessions including presentations, discussion forums, debates and focus groups to provide an interactive and participative environment for experiential learning and sharing on a range of common topics and learning needs identified within the network.
Youth Caucus: 14th - 15th November 2018
The past ten years have witnessed a gradual increase in the recognition of the necessity to engage youth on issues that concern them. Young people between 15 and 24 years old are 1.2 billion strong and constitute 17% of the world population. Young People’s ownership over education and participation at the local, national, regional, and global levels are vital to building sustainable, democratic, and people-owned decision-making processes.
This year, GCE is proud to bring the vibrant voices of global youth leaders to the GCE World Assembly. The Youth Caucus is an opportunity to showcase the impact of youth agenda in education and define strategies on how best to increase youth participation and involvement in GCE’s movement and campaigns. The Youth Caucus aims to ensure representativeness within the global network of civil society organization to effectively integrate youth in decision making processes.
World Assembly: 16th - 18th November 2018
The World Assembly is a unique opportunity for education campaigners and advocates from within our membership and beyond to come together, debate, reflect and collectively plan according to a challenging and transformative vision, committed to the full realization of the human right to education for all. As well as debating on a wide range of relevant issues relating to universal education, the World Assembly also determines the priorities of our campaigns for the next four years by setting our strategic direction. As we deeply reflect on the growth of the movement, successes and challenges faced over the years, we are excited to look at 2018 and beyond as we engage with the GCE 2019 - 2022 strategic plan.
At the World Assembly, GCE members will elect board members to oversee the work of the Secretariat and provide overall strategic direction, as well as elect a new President for the Campaign. Over the years, the movement has been steered by incredible leaders from our first President, Kailash Satyarthi, to the current President, Camilla Croso who was voted in 2011 (re-elected in 2015). These crucial elections of both the President and Board Members determines the shape and direction of the movement for the next few years.
In 2019, GCE celebrates 20 years of existence. Since 1999, GCE and its members have delivered a united global civil society voice and the movement has grown from strength to strength. In celebration of this significant milestone, at the World Assembly the GCE will launch the 20th Anniversary Campaign to further escalate our work as we collectively aim to end the global education crisis.
As a civil society movement that promotes and defends education as a basic human right, GCE looks forward to this November in Nepal, with the expectation that the events will further enhance collaboration between education civil society organisations around the world and join capacities in advancing the right to education.
