Giving the Youth their place in the global movement
Universidad de Antioquia
In January 2015, the World Assembly of the Global Campaign for Education formally recognised the need to represent and include youth-led movements more formally in its structure. Many of our members already work in partnership with youth-led organisations, and it was time to give them the place they deserve in the global education civil society movement.
This year, the GCE goes one step further by hosting a Youth Caucus during our World Assembly in November.
The idea? Let the Youth exchange and debate, and have their voice heard in the definition of GCE’s new strategic plan and policy positions.
Why be a youth-member?
The past ten years have witnessed a gradual increase in the recognition of the necessity of youth engagement on issues that concern young people. This increase comes with a similar rise in the number and proportion of youth in the world. According to the United Nations, in 2015, youth between the ages of 15 and 24 numbered 1.2 billion, or over 25% of the global population.
By including youth-led organisations and enabling them to participate in the decision-making process of the matters that relates to them, we can make sure to shape a better future and create a more sustainable development pathway.
As a youth-member, you will get the possibility to exchange with other young people and to be heard in the international discussions where topics relates to education. You will participate in a strong movement working to end the global education crisis, by advocating for people’s right to a free, quality public education.
There are many benefits to becoming a member of GCE:
- your organisation will be part of a truly international movement with members in 96 countries
- access to a network of like-minded organisations and professionals working for the same objectives, with opportunities to develop skills, share knowledge and increase the impact of your work
- GCE is led by its members: the way the campaign develops is down to you.
How to become a part of the movement
Who can become a member?
Youth-led organisations at the national level are invited to join a national coalition which is already a member of GCE. Or, if there is no education civil society national coalition in your country, you are welcome to form a new one (more on how to form and qualify as a national coalition here).
The GCE will gladly receive as direct members applications from regional or international Youth led organisations. In order to become a member, the organisation will need to fill out an application, which you can find here. If your organisation wishes to participate in the upcoming World Assembly as a member with voting rights, the deadline for applying is 31st of July. Your application will be then reviewed by our Board, and in case of acceptance a formal acceptance letter will be issued.
For new members whose applications was received after July 31st and accepted before the World Assembly, they will still have the possibility to attend as observers.
You can find the application form and read more about becoming a member here.
